Mt. Etna Volcano - Sicily, Italy
This live webcam shows Mount Etna from the town of Agira in Enna Province on the island of Sicily, Italy. Positioned about 700 meters above sea level, the camera overlooks the surrounding valley and Lake Pozzillo with Mount Etna rising in the distance.
Mount Etna is Europe's largest and most active volcano, standing at roughly 3,350 meters above sea level. The volcano frequently produces ash emissions, lava flows, and explosive eruptions that can often be seen from many parts of eastern Sicily.
From this vantage point about 43 kilometers away, viewers can observe the massive volcanic cone dominating the Sicilian landscape. On clear days the summit and upper slopes are visible, while during periods of activity volcanic plumes may be seen rising above the crater.
Volcanic lightning: During powerful eruptions of Mount Etna, ash plumes can generate intense static electricity, producing dramatic bolts of “volcanic lightning” that flash through the ash cloud above the crater.
